Netflix Android App Update; 'WiFi only' Playback Feature to Help with Your Data Usage

Netflix has just added a new feature to their Android app with an update that could prove very useful. In fact, it's such a remarkably simple, yet useful feature that it makes you wonder why no one thought of it before. Their is now an optional setting that restricts video playback to WiFi networks. This will make it much easier to avoid any data overages with your carrier's data service. The default setting for this useful new feature is open to user discretion, so if you would like to take advantage of it, you will need to enable it.

The best part of the feature is that you can still browse Netflix' library via your mobile connection, but your movie simply won't play without a WiFi connection. Neato! Of course, if you are with Sprint, or have one of T-Mobile's newest plans, then it really doesn't matter either way. For everyone else, we gotta give props to Netflix for helping us avoid overages.

iPhone 5: Chinese company may sue Apple

It may still be few days for Apple's next-generation iPhone unveiling, however, the much-awaited phone is already facing lawsuit threat in China.

In a video, a Chinese company called Goophone has vowed to not allow iPhone 5 to enter Chinese market if the upcoming iPhone 5 looks similar to its recently-launched Goophone I5. Incidentally, Goophone 5 phone appears to have been modelled by the company as per the speculations on the internet about the next iPhone's design. The company reportedly also plans to apply for a patent for its design in China.

In China, designs are patented on first-come-first-serve basis. Hence, the manufacturer has the first right over the design and can lawfully sue the Cupertino-based giant if iPhone 5 resembles its phone in appearance.

The Goophone I5 has a 4-inch screen, which the next edition of the Apple iPhone is expected to have as well. It also features a smaller dock connector, headphone jack at the bottom and a 1.4GHz quad-core processor with 1GB RAM. However, instead of the Apple iOS, the phone runs, ironically, on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). On the back, the phone has a honeybee emblem rather than the iconic bitten apple logo of Apple. Goophone also sells knockoffs of other popular smartphones, such as the Galaxy S III.

This potential lawsuit over the design of the device in China can be a problem for Apple as the country is a huge market for its products. A court case over the patented design will push back the launch date for the upcoming iPhone 5 in China, which can hurt sales quite a bit.

A few months ago, the iPhone maker was forced to shell out $60 million to a Chinese company called Proview over the 'iPad' brand. It had trademarked the iPad name in the country and held exclusive rights to use it, thus denying Apple the opportunity to launch it until it received compensation.

Upcoming Windows Phone 8X HTC specs leak online

HTC is prepping to unveil a few new devices in the next couple weeks. We’ll be live from the event on the 19th, but the expectations are that they’ll announce a few new Windows Phone 8 devices, plus possibly a follow-up to their Android-powered Flyer tablet.
Heavily leaked online, the HTC “Accord” will probably go by the final name of the “Windows Phone 8X HTC.” The specs surfaced online, via the “Football” Twitter account – this is the same person who was bang-on about Nokia’s Lumia 820 and 920 devices. According to the leaked specs, the Windows Phone 8X will come with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch display, 8MP camera that shoots 1080p HD videos, 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi, 16GB internal storage, 1GB RAM, and come with Beats Audio.
There’s no word on price or availability, but that will come clearer on September 19th. HTC is also expected to announce their flagship WP8 Zenith, and another mid-range device called the Rio.

Nokia 920, 820 leaks reveal wireless charging and promising specs

This week promises a lot for Nokia fans, as the world’s press, including ITProPortal, flocks to New York for a special launch event hosted by the company. The Finns will be hoping the firm’s revival starts here, and new handsets in the form of the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 appear to be fronting Nokia’s fresh assault on the market.

Photos of the two Windows Phone 8 models were leaked online at the end of last week and the same source of this revelation has slipped another image into the mix that will no doubt heighten anticipation ahead of the announcements expected in New York. The @evleaks Twitter account has followed up images of the smartphones with a new post depicting a wireless charger.

Tweeted with the heading “Nokia Lumia Charging Pad”, the picture shows the Lumias sitting atop a pebble with power surging through the case of the device. Wireless charging would certainly be a welcome feature on the new models, matching up with the capabilities of the sales-smashing devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3.

“Sources familiar” with Nokia’s plans have confirmed to The Verge that Nokia is indeed packaging wireless charging with its flagship phones, which will support the “Qi wireless power standard — making it compatible with other wireless charging products.”....

HTC may intro two tablets at September 19 event

HTC may have two Android tablets for its upcoming September 19 press conference, if recent chatter is to be believed.

According to rumors making the rounds this week, HTC is working on a 7-inch Flyer/Evo View 4G successor that will be based off Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and likely feature a custom HTC experience with support for the Scribe digital pen.

Hardware specifications are said to include a 7-inch 1,280×768-pixel display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, a 3-megapixel camera on the rear, and a 1-megapixel front-facing camera.

HTC will reportedly squeeze everything into a superslim 7.1mm thin anodized aluminum body, much like the HTC One S. It isn't clear whether the presumed Flyer 2 will feature a dual-core or quad-core CPU; however, we should expect retail price to play the determining factor. Anything above $199 will be a tough sell in the wake of the Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire.

Remember the rumblings from nearly a year ago when we learned that HTC was prepping a quad-core Quattro tablet?
At the time, we were under the impression that HTC would bring a Tegra 3-powered 10.1-inch tablet, 1GB RAM, and Beats Audio to Mobile World Congress. Lo and behold, HTC has yet to deliver a tablet since the Jetstream. In fact, HTC had seemingly given up on tablets for the time being....

Mobile weekly wrap: New tablets and phones all around

For all the mobile tech-obsessed folks out there, the first weeks of September are beginning to look a like like Christmas. Nokia, Motorola, and Amazon all took to their respective stages and unveiled their newest entries into the competitive mobile marketplace. Next week, Apple will make an announcement that is anything but secret as they are likely to reveal the iPhone 5. Like any kid that finds his or her presents in the closet, we’re still excited to unwrap and hold it. That will have to wait, though, because right now we have the hottest topics in mobile technology from the week of September 2-7, 2012.

Nokia re-enters the arena

Nokia phones used to be everywhere, recognizable by that catchy MIDI jingle. Sadly, the days of Snake being the best game on your phone are long gone. Nokia’s still here and kicking–at least that’s what it would like us to believe with the announcement of two Windows Phone 8 handsets. Its mid-range entry, the Lumia 820, brings consumers a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video for a presumably affordable price. The real show stopper from Nokia comes from another number–the Lumia 920. That model comes with the promise of the PureView camera and wireless charging. Keep an eye for both phones later this year....

HTC, Losing Android Battle, Looks to Windows Phone

HTC is hoping to rejuvenate its business with smartphones running Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 software, Reuters reported Sept. 6.

The Taiwan-based smartphone maker made its name in the United States with Android-running devices such as the Droid Evo 4G and the Droid Incredible, but the tremendous success of Samsung's Galaxy devices have worked to leave HTC and others with dwindling market shares. In April, HTC CEO Peter Chou acknowledged that the company was having a hard time competing in the United States and would shift its focus to European and Asian markets, where it has had a bit more success. Though it still continues to struggle.

Jason Mackenzie, HTC's president of sales and marketing, told Reuters that HTC doesn't plan to scale back its Android effort but to grow its Windows Phone offering alongside it.

"I feel very strongly we've got very concrete carrier support in every region around the world, including the United States, and I'm not talking about just one carrier," Mackenzie said, according to the report. "Our plan is to go big on Windows 8."

Nokia is for now Microsoft's biggest partner in Windows Phone, which will launch during the fourth quarter. On Sept. 5 Nokia introduced two smartphones that will run the OS, the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, though it hasn't yet shared pricing or carrier information.

HTC's change of strategy suggests how difficult it is to compete for U.S. consumers—a sentiment repeated by analysts in response to the new Nokia devices.

"Nokia has delivered a device that although not underwhelming serves to remind us how difficult the task of winning back mindshare in this space will be," Lee Simpson, an equity analyst with Jefferies wrote in a Sept. 5 research note.

Mackenzie suggested to Reuters that device makers have so far devoted their top design teams to their Android efforts and treated Windows Phone designs as more of an afterthought—a theory that Nokia would surely take exception to, but one that shows how HTC believes it can compete.

HTC's phones haven't been poorly executed—some reviewers have preferred the HTC One X to the Galaxy S III, which debuted around the same time and has been a hit, with more than 20 million sold within 100 days, Samsung announced recently—the HTC phones just haven't sold well, given the degree of competition.

In Declining Mobile Phone Market, Samsung Maintains Lead in Sales

MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL The worldwide mobile phone market declined 1.9% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2012 while Samsung (SSNLF) maintained its lead over Nokia (NOK) and Apple (AAPL) as the world’s top mobile phone vendor. According to IDC’s European Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 42.1 million units during the quarter, a drop of 1.9% year-on-year.

The feature phone segment continued to decline, with shipments down 30% to 14.7 million units. The segment continues to be supported by the lowest price levels: 58% of the total feature phone shipments were under the $75 price point and the fastest growing segment is for phones at half that price.

Smartphone shipments increased 26.6% year-on-year to 27.4 million units during the quarter.

“The second quarter was impacted by a weaker economic environment in Western Europe, which contributed to lower demand," said Francisco Jeronimo, European mobile devices research manager at IDC. "Moreover, there are rumors that a number of devices will be unveiled in the third quarter and mobile operators are focused on clearing stocks ahead of the new launches. The Samsung Galaxy S III was the only major product release in the second quarter, and therefore the biggest seller in the quarter, which contributed to Samsung's dominance in the market. The third quarter will be flooded with a number of devices on different operating systems. The new devices may represent major developments from previous versions, and current devices may not be upgradable to the new platform releases. This has led consumers to postpone their upgrades and wait for the new 'crown jewels' from the major OEMs to be unveiled.”

Android continued to increase its market share, supported by Samsung's strong performance. Google's OS grew 71% year-on-year, only outpaced by Windows Phone 7, which grew 874% year-on-year. Android now accounts for 65% of total smartphone shipments in the region.

Mobile Phone Privacy: Buck Stops With the User

Cellphone and smartphone users have a love-hate relationship with mobile apps. While they love the functionality and enhanced user experience they bring to the table, clearly many hate the perceived privacy intrusions, suggests a newly released report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

More than half -- 54 percent -- of app users surveyed decided against installing a cellphone app when they discovered how much personal information they would need to share in order to use it. Thirty percent uninstalled an app that was already on their cellphone because they learned it was collecting personal information that they didn't wish to share.

Many cellphone users take additional steps to protect the personal data on their mobile devices, including backing up photos, contacts and other files -- tasks performed by 41 percent of those surveyed. Some 32 percent have cleared the browsing or search histories on their phone, and 19 percent have turned off the location-tracking feature due to privacy concerns.

Finally, 12 percent of cell owners say that another person has accessed their phone's contents in a way that made them feel that their privacy had been invaded.

A Pew spokesperson was not immediately available to provide further details.......

Android 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich Now On 20.9% of Devices; Jelly Bean Up to 1.2% Already

The new OS data for Android has been released by the Android Developers, and things are starting to change a bit quicker now. The adoption rate of Android 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich was a bit slow since it was released, but over the past couple of months things have been accelerating. While Gingerbread still covers a vast majority of Android smartphones (with 57.5%), Android 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich is now on 20.9%. This is an increase of almost 6% in just a month for ICS and a decrease of about 3% for Gingerbread. Jelly Bean saw a small jump as well this month. It went from just .8% when it debuted, to 1.2% this month.

It will be interesting to see how much quicker Jelly Bean gets adopted than ICS, since they are so similar.

Google's newly announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system may be making its way to two of the most popular Samsung devices this fall, lining up with Apple's iOS 6 release date.

The Samsung Galaxy S3, which is the company's flagship smartphone of the year, and its Galaxy Note gadget may be getting the upgrade as soon as this autumn, Sam Mobile reports. The news comes from an insider source that has been correct about the Ice Cream Sandwich updates for Galaxy mobile phones and tablets, the website says.

Test firmwares for the Galaxy S3 have passed testing successfully, and the company is now working on a public version of the first Jelly Bean update for this device. The release date for Android 4.1 is waiting for Google's approval to officially roll out, according to Sam Mobile. The situation is the same for the Galaxy Note, and although testing has been successful there is "still no official word" from Samsung. .bk_ggl div {height:92px!important; margin-bottom:20px!important;} Must ReadDemonoidDemonoid Return Could Be Halted By Anti-Piracy ActionWadjdaSaudi Arabia's First Female Moviemaker Debuts At Venice Film FestivalSponsorship Link

As for the Galaxy S3's predecessor, the report indicates that the Galaxy S2 is still in the testing phase for the Jelly Bean update. However, the source has said that although no time frame has been specified, the Galaxy S2 will definitely receive the Android 4.1 software since it is still a popular device in the mobile market. If the Jelly Bean rollout for this device somehow falls through, users will receive some type of "value pack," but no details have been mentioned on what this offer will entail.

"If Samsung decides at the last moment not to update the Galaxy S II, all Galaxy S II owners will get a value pack update," the Samsung-themed website wrote. "But so far there is no reason not to update the Galaxy S II to Android 4.1."

Samsung will be unveiling its Galaxy Note 2 "phablet" device on August 29 at a Samsung Unpacked event, similar to the way the Galaxy S3 was revealed. The source that spoke to Sam Mobile said that it is unclear if this device will get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box or if it will come equipped with Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0.

This isn't the first time rumors have sparked about the Galaxy S2 and S3 phones getting the Jelly Bean update. At the end of July, Sam Mobile also reported that these smartphones were in the testing phases for the update, and speculated that the recently announced operating system would roll out in August or September. Previous rumors have also indicated that the Galaxy S2 would not get the Jelly Bean software, but Samsung has said nothing to confirm this statement. A report from early July, just days after Jelly Bean was announced, said that hardware limitations would prevent the S2 from supporting Android 4.1, but cited no sources to back up this claim.

Google unveiled its new "buttery smooth" Jelly Bean operating system at its I/E developer's conference at the end of June, and has since rolled it out to its line of Nexus 7 tablets, the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Nexus S and Motorola Xoom. It is expected to launch on other high-end devices in the coming months, but no announcements have been made.

The Jelly Bean software boasts a host of features that were not available on the previous Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, including the following:

Google Now: This is Google's iteration of a digital personal assistant. Google Now draws data about its users, and provides search results before a search is even performed based on previous entries. It will also create cards for users based on weather, traffic, places and more.

Project Butter: The Android 4.1 software is said to offer the smoothest interface of any Android operating system yet, an incentive known as "Project Butter." Scrolling and responsiveness are reportedly faster than in previous treat-themed updates.

Notifications and Widgets: Users can expand notifications and perform social functions such as replying to a tweet or sharing a photo through this drop down menu. Widgets are easier to place on the home screen, as items automatically move to create a space for a new icon. Launching and exiting apps are also quicker due to the smoother performance of the overall operating system.

Camera and Gallery: A slight upgrade allows Jelly Bean users to swipe between the camera and gallery app seamlessly.

Keyboard and Voice Input: The keyboard for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is more responsive, and users can add shortcuts to their dictionary to create their own shorthand terms. Voice input can be used to dictate notes and messages, and the feature can now be used offline as well.

A recent report has said that with its debut Jelly Bean is present on 0.8 percent of Android devices. This is a decent margin considering it has yet to be rolled out to the flagship Android smartphone on the market. Check out the video below to get a better grasp of what Jelly Bean is like on the Nexus 7 tablet.

There is a third device that is a new variation of the original Kindle eReader. It is called the Kindle Paperwhite, and has a new front-lit eReader with Amazon?s latest E-Ink display. It will have a black and white touchscreen E-Ink display with 25% better contrast than previous-generation Kindles and 212 pixels per inch. It will be priced at $159.99, (hence the confusion earlier about prices).

Correction from above: Apparently, we still didn't quite have the facts 100% straight. Yes, there is going to be a new eReader called the Kindle Paperwhite, but the device for $159.99 will actually be an enhanced version of the current Kindle Fire (effectively a Kindle Fire 2). We are still unsure as to the price of the eReader.

Awesome specs/price/features!

I've been waiting for a dual-band WiFi device (other than the Galaxy Note 10.1") to come out.

Now I've got an excuse... I mean reason to upgrade my home WiFi setup.

Nexus 7 16GB
Galaxy Tab 2 7"
Transformer TF101 32GB
That dual band capability is pretty sick! Our IT department in their infinite wisdom set up the public network on 5GHZ only under the guise of trying to avoid interference from things like microwaves and cordless phones. Really, they just didn't want to have to deal with complaints of lag due to too many mobile devices accessing it.

FCC Tells the Wireless Carriers to Be Prepared; Soon will Test Data Speed Claims

This is a discussion on FCC Tells the Wireless Carriers to Be Prepared; Soon will Test Data Speed Claims within the Android Tablet News forums, part of the Android Tablet News & Polls category; Here is some welcome news. Here is some welcome news. Have you ever wondered why your wireless data speeds don't ever seem to come close to the maximum, or sometimes even the median, that the manufacturer advertises? Most of the time it' simply network saturation, but sometimes it's still debatable as to whether our service is what our carriers claim. Apparently, the FCC wants to find out the reality of this for consumers. They plan to have the public help them do performance testing on wireless carrier networks to see if everything measures up to the marketing claims. Here's the full press release, FCC TO LAUNCH MOBILE BROADBAND SERVICES TESTING AND MEASURMENT PROGRAM

On September 21, 2012, the Federal Communications Commission will hold an open meeting to discuss a new program to measure mobile broadband service performance in the United States.

The National Broadband Plan (NBP), developed by the FCC, made recommendations to improve the availability of information for consumers about their broadband service. The FCC has undertaken a series of projects as part of its Consumer Empowerment Agenda to realize this charge, including launching a broadband speed test app and, most significantly, undertaking a comprehensive effort-in partnership with industry, the public research community, and other stakeholders-to provide the first detailed and accurate measurements of fixed broadband service performance in the United States. This past July, the FCC released its second Measuring Broadband America report, showing significant improvements in broadband performance and service offerings as compared to the first report roughly one year earlier.

The FCC now proposes a program to develop information on mobile broadband service performance in the United States utilizing the collaborative model underlying the success of its fixed broadband program. As the Measuring Broadband America program has proven, the broadband performance data produced by the statistically sound methodology of the program allows comparisons and analyses that are valuable to consumers and spur competition among service providers.

In addition, the experience gained within the Measuring Broadband America program has proven the value of working with a broad range of participants including industry and the public research community on the complex technical challenges related to broadband performance measurement and study. The FCC notes that in launching this effort we have already received commitments to cooperate by major wireless carriers and CTIA-The Wireless Association?. With the launch of this open meeting, the FCC looks forward to the participation of other critical stakeholders, including the public research community.

At the open meeting, Commission staff from the Office of Engineering and Technology and the Consumer and Government Affairs Bureau will discuss with interested parties the technical methods for performance testing of mobile broadband Internet service, methodological approaches to remotely acquiring and analyzing such data, and other methodological considerations for the testing of mobile broadband performance.

On one hand I say it's about time, but on the other hand I'm not always certain the FCC knows what they are doing. Where oh where is their definition of what 3G and 4G speeds really are?

On the plus side we may actually be able to figure out who is consistently providing the best bandwidth, maybe.

New Getac Z710 Android Tablet Can Take a Thrashing and Dishes One Out to Your Wallet

There is a new touch-spec Android tablet coming to the market soon. It's called the Getac Z710, and the company claims it is the "world's most compact and robust Android tablet". While that lofty claim may or may not be true, one thing is for sure... this tablet will give your wallet a pounding that will make it beg for a hospital. The non-3G version of the tablet will sell for $1499.99, and the 3G version goes for $1799.99. Ouch! Here's a quote with a description of the tablet to give you an idea of its capabilities, Equipped with a Gorilla Glass display and a rubberized shell casing that encompasses the entirety of the tablet, the Z710 is engineered to take some serious abuse. Although we probably wouldn't suggest using it as target practice, the Getac Z710 is a suitable tablet for harsh work environments.

Measuring in at 8.5 x 5.6-inches with slightly more than one-inch in thickness, the 2-pound tablet isn't the most portable of tablets. But its ability to survive drops of up to six feet, its certified protection against dust and liquids as well as its ability to operate in extreme temperatures as low as -4?F and high as 122?F makes it one tough cookie.

Another appealing aspect of the tablet for work environments is the company's LumiBond technology, allowing users wearing gloves to easily interact with the capacitive touch display. The Android 2.3 tablet is equipped with most standard tablet features including a front camera, a 5MP rear camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, barcode/RFID reader, Bluetooth and 3G availability.

I don't know about you guys, but this seems severely over-priced, even for a tough-spec device. Not long ago, we shared that Fujitsu will soon be offering a tough-spec device for just $549.99, and the well-known and well-respected Panasonic Toughpad goes for $1299.99. It will be interesting to see if this Getac really is that much tougher than those other offerings. If anyone in the forums has familiarity with previous Getac products, please let us know what is so special about them.

Yup, they've priced themselves out of business. What a joke.
