Anonymous formclose (x)Apple Cutting Back on Memory Chip Orders from SamsungThursday September 6, 2012 7:42 pm PDT by Eric SlivkaReuters reports that Apple has been cutting back on memory chips orders from Samsung for its mobile devices, seeking to diversify its component supplier list by increasing orders from Toshiba, Elpida, and Micron. The move is said to be a long-term one not specifically tied to the recent court battles between Apple and Samsung.Apple has been cutting its orders from Samsung as it tries to diversify its lines of supply for memory chips, although the South Korean firm remains on the list of initial suppliers for the new iPhone, the source told Reuters. The person declined to be named because the negotiations are confidential.

The Korea Economic Daily, citing an unnamed industry source, reported on Friday that Apple had dropped Samsung from the list of memory chip suppliers for the first batch of the new iPhone, whose release is widely expected to be announced on September 12.

Digitimes reported nearly identical news almost a year ago, supporting the notion that the move is part of a comprehensive strategy for Apple.

Late last month following the $1 billion verdict against Samsung in a U.S. court case addressing Apple's claims that Samsung had infringed upon its patents and copied its designs, Reuters noted that Samsung was working hard to compartmentalize the dispute by keeping the firm's CEO somewhat out of the loop in order to keep the dispute from spilling over and affecting Samsung's role as a component supplier for Apple and other companies. *yawn* yet you created an account just to post on an apple forum. Now who's dumb?Rating: 24 PositivesAvatarronm99Posted: 1 day ago at 08:16 pmHow can Apple not be working to remove Samsung from its supply chain?

Even putting aside the animosity from the lawsuits, I'm sure that Apple knows that there are leaks between the Samsung components and smartphone divisions. Having Samsung as a supplier give the smartphone division insight into what Apple is coming up with next.

Memory chips now, processors soon, displays soon after.

Apple gives Samsung the most revenue out of all Sammy's business relationships. Apple can get their screens and parts elsewhere, probably even better than what Sammy supplies. Anonymous formclose (x)Amazon Introduces 8.9-Inch and 7-Inch Kindle Fire HD at $299 and $199, Updated Kindle Fire Drops to $159Thursday September 6, 2012 12:01 pm PDT by Eric SlivkaWith Apple expected to introduce its "iPad mini" next month, observers are closely watching what other companies are doing in the smaller tablet space, and a media event today Amazon has shown its hand with a new line of Kindle products headlined by a new 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet with 1920x1200 display.

As noted by The Verge, the Android-based Kindle Fire HD includes stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus support, dual Wi-Fi antennas for better performance The Kindle Fire software has also been enhanced with new Whispersync technology for saving and syncing game and audiobook progress, as well as new parental controls, third-party apps such as Facebook and Skype, and an IMDB partnership for displaying cast and production info on movies as they're being shown.

The standard 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD is priced at $299 with 16 GB, but Amazon is also offering a $499 Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE model that bumps storage to 32 GB. The LTE model comes with a data package costing $49.99 per year that offers 250 MB per month of data, 20 GB of cloud storage, and a $10 Amazon Appstore credit. Both models ship on November 20. Amazon is also introducing a 7-inch 16 GB Kindle Fire HD for $199 that begins shipping on September 14, but details on differences from the 8.9-inch model such as screen resolution are not yet clear.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos introducing new Kindle Fire lineup
Amazon has also introduced an updated original Kindle Fire. The Verge notes that the 7-inch Android tablet has been updated with a new processor, more RAM, and increased battery life. The updates also come with a significant price drop to $159, down from the current $199. The new Kindle Fire begins shipping on September 14.

Finally, Amazon offered updates to its more traditional Kindle lineup, dropping the entry-level Kindle price to just $69 while introducing its new Kindle Paperwhite, as detailed by TechCrunch. The Kindle Paperwhite, which will be available October 1 at $119 for the standard model and $179 for the 3G model with free cellular access, includes frontlighting while still boasting an 8-week battery life.

Update 12:58 PM: Amazon's Kindle Fire HD press release clarifies that the resolution on the 7-inch model is 1280x800. [ 645 comments ] Tweet Top Rated Comments(View all)

Avatarmariocapo2 days ago at 12:05 pmGotta give Amazon a lot of credit. They took a lot of great pages out of the Apple playbook when it comes to ecosystem, hardware/software integration and product presentations. The Fire HD with 4G, 32GB internal storage, 200GB cloud storage and $50/year data plan is pretty mind-blowing for $499. Wow! I should add, while still putting their own innovative twists on their products in both hardware and software. The newest comScore data should have Google, Samsung and LG (?) fans happy. According to the latest marketing numbers from the company, Google's Android still leads in the following category: Top Smartphone Platforms 3; Month Avg. Ending Jul. 2012 vs. 3 Month Avg. Ending Apr. 2012; Total U.S. Smartphone Subscribers Ages 13+. Android took up 52.2% of the market, which was an increase of 1.4%. Apple's iOS came in second with 33.4%, which was an increase of 2%. These numbers came at the expense of RIM, Microsoft and Symbian.

The most interesting thing about the study was the OEM numbers for the following category: Top Mobile OEMs 3; Month Avg. Ending Jul. 2012 vs. 3 Month Avg. Ending Apr. 2012; Total U.S. Mobile Subscribers (Smartphone & Non-Smartphone) Ages 13+. Samsung took first place (unsurprisingly) with 25.6%, which was a tiny decline of -0.3%. What was surprising is that LG is still in second place and Apple is still in third. LG held 18.4%, which was a decline of -0.8%, and Apple showed 16.3%, which was an increase of 1.9%. This dip was at the expense of Motorola which dropped -1.3% to an 11.2% marketshare.

Wow, even though they gained a few points, that's gotta sting for Apple to be second fiddle to LG. I wonder why they haven't sued them yet? For more info, hit the source link below.

Anonymous formclose (x)Tim Cook and Jony Ive Top Vanity Fair's 'The New Establishment' ListThursday September 6, 2012 11:45 am PDT by Jordan GolsonNewImageVanity Fair magazine has published its yearly listing of top media power players, called 'The New Establishment'. Apple CEO Tim Cook is paired with designer Jony Ive in the number 1 spot, up from number 4 in 2011.
In the 18 years that Vanity Fair has been ranking America’s power players, Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, was the youngest person ever to top the list. But Zuckerberg relinquishes his two-year perch at the top of Vanity Fair’s annual New Establishment list this year, trading places with former spot No. 4 holders Tim Cook and Jonathan Ive. In the wake of Steve Jobs’s death, Vanity Fair says, the two longtime understudies have upheld the C.E.O.’s vision for Apple, and have even hinted that the best is yet to come for the wildly successful company.

The top five reads like a who's who of tech with Cook, Ive and Zuckerberg being joined by Amazon head Jeff Bezos, Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and Square and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey.

'The New Establishment' isn't the only list that Tim Cook finds his company represented on: Apple is also listed as number 8 on Fortune's list of the world's fastest growing companies -- an astonishing feat for a company that will do nearly $150 billion in revenue this year.
