Apple 'Unlikely' to Use Audience's New Noise Suppression Technology in iPhone 5

Audience today announced that it appears "unlikely" Apple will use the company's earSmart noise suppression technology in the upcoming iPhone 5. Audience's technology was reported to a key innovation providing support for Siri on the iPhone 4S, and Apple was reported back in February to have licensed Audience's next-generation technology for future products. But with today's announcement, it appears that Apple has elected not to take advantage of the technology.

Audience sells processors and licenses its processor IP to Apple Inc. and certain of its subsidiaries (collectively, OEM) for inclusion in the OEM's mobile phones pursuant to a Master Development and Supply Agreement (MDSA). Pursuant to a statement of work under the MDSA, amended in March 2012, Audience developed and licensed a new generation of processor IP for use in the OEM's devices. However, the OEM is not obligated to use Audience's processor IP.

Audience now believes that it is unlikely that the OEM will enable Audience's processor IP in its next generation mobile phone. Audience is not aware of any intended changes by this OEM to its use of Audience's processors or processor IP in prior generations of the OEM's mobile phones.

Apple's decision not to use Audience's new IP in the iPhone 5 will impact Audience's financial picture beginning one quarter after the introduction of the iPhone 5, as Audience receives licensing royalties from Apple one quarter after the device's are sold to end users.

Peter Santos, president and chief executive officer, commented, "While we are disappointed by this development, we are confident in the diversification of our business and see sustainable growth in 2012 and beyond. As such we are raising guidance for the third quarter of 2012. Looking ahead, we believe our expansion into adjacent markets such as Smart TVs, automotive, and notebooks, will continue to bring growth in 2013 and beyond."

Audience delivered a standalone voice processing chip for the iPhone 4, but the company's technology was reportedly incorporated directly into the A5 chip used to power the iPhone 4S. The improved Audience technology integrated into the A5 was said to be much better at suppressing background noise, thus allowing Siri to more easily pick out the user's voice.

It is unclear what voice processing technology Apple will be using in the iPhone 5, but it seems that the company has found a better or more cost-effective solution than that offered by Audience.

Apple, FBI deny hackers' claims

"The FBI has not requested this information from Apple, nor have we provided it to the FBI or any organization," said Natalie Kerris, an Apple spokeswoman.

The hackers may have posted some legitimate users' device names and the unique identifier codes assigned to their iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches, according to Sean Sullivan, a security adviser at F-Secure Corp. who examined a data file that the hackers released. It is not known whether the hackers really have the other information they claim to have redacted from the data file, including user names, mobile phone numbers, and addresses.

"What they have released is not a very serious breach at all," Sullivan said in an interview. As for claims that the information came from the FBI, he said: "They've offered no additional corroborating evidence, they've offered nothing else - they've immediately demanded no interviews. I think they've made it up."

The incident is the latest skirmish between hackers operating under the banner of Anonymous - who have often cultivated the media to promote their attacks, and have sometimes fallen short in their claims - and law enforcement agencies and large corporations that the hackers argue are violating digital freedoms.

The hackers say they accessed the Apple data in March by breaking into a laptop of FBI agent Christopher Stangl, who has been active online in recruiting agents with cybersecurity savvy. They claim to have used a vulnerability in Java, the popular Internet technology managed by Oracle Corp., whose flaws were exploited in attacks that infected more than 600,000 Mac computers in April and more than 100,000 Windows machines last week.

By themselves, the device codes released in the latest incident aren't sensitive. Called unique device identifier numbers, or UDIDs, they are just strings of numbers and letters that have limited value when viewed in isolation.

Still, taken with other information, they may be used to authenticate users trying to access a service. Amid privacy complaints, Apple earlier this year banned applications that use the code for tracking.

Apple said that its latest version of software for the iPhone and mobile devices introduces new features that replace the use of UDIDs, which will be eventually phased out.

Challenges of Smart Phone Forensics

Mobile devices have become an essential component of our daily lives. These devices keep us connected and act as so much more than the cell phones and portable music players of the 1990's. It is common today for a smartphone to act as a mobile office, social tool, and an entertainment center all rolled into one. Many households have one or two computers shared by the inhabitants, but almost everyone over 16 has a cell phone and, since the device is tied more closely to the user, the data is also.
Today’s smartphones come with storage capacity that is similar to business laptops of just a few years ago. The combination of functionality and storage space makes smartphones a prime target for forensics investigators.

Data commonly found on Smartphones

Email
Text Messaging
Photos
Video
Audio
Web History
Call History
Application Data
eBooks
Maps
With additional functionality being added almost daily, smartphones are a rapidly changing environment which presents several challenges to a forensic investigator.

OS Changes

Unlike the windows world where major OS (Operating System) changes are rare smartphones receive frequent major OS updates. Windows XP was sold on new computers from 2001 thru the end of 2009 and is still in widespread use in both the home and business markets. As you can see from the table below, the iPhone IOS (iPhone Operating System) has had major releases annually. Major releases for one Smartphone OS or another are happening nearly every quarter.......

How to Buy a Smartphone

If you thought choosing a smartphone was difficult last year, it's even tougher now. That's a good thing, though, because it means innovation in the wireless industry has skyrocketed. All four major U.S. carriers have stepped up their data network speeds. The latest crop of Android smartphones is more diverse and powerful than ever. And Apple's game-changing iPhone 4 has finally made it over to Verizon Wireless, opening up access to another 90 million customers.
But not everyone in the industry has met the same level of success this year. Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 and HP's webOS have been struggling to stay in the game. Research In Motion is paddling furiously to stay afloat with an aging BlackBerry lineup. And Nokia sold its Symbian soul and threw in with Microsoft; as a result, Nokia won't be a player in the U.S. for at least another six months.
Taken together, these massive changes make most of the old advice about choosing a smartphone obsolete. So let's throw it all away and start over. What should you be looking for when buying a smartphone? Here are seven key points to consider:

Carrier

Despite all the hardware and mobile software innovation, your wireless service provider remains your most important decision. No matter which device you buy, it's a doorstop unless you have good wireless coverage. Maybe you have friends and family on the same carrier that you talk to for free, and you don't want that to change with your next phone. Maybe you're lusting after a certain device—say, an iPhone, or an unlocked smartphone for international travel. And of course, you want to choose a carrier that offers fair prices, and provides the best coverage in your area. These are all good reasons to put the carrier decision first.

We have two major features to help you choose. For our Readers' Choice Awards, more than 10,000 PCMag.com readers told us which carrier they prefer based on coverage, call quality, device selection and other factors. And for our 2011 Fastest Mobile Networks feature, we're sending drivers to 21 U.S. cities to scope out which smartphone carriers have the best Internet access.

Operating System

Sometimes, a platform's user interface or app selection just speaks to you, and that's all there is to it. With that in mind, and at the risk of attracting flames, let's break it down as well as we can for those who aren't so fully vested....

Apple iPhone hit by text message spoofing bug

Apple has confirmed the existence of a flaw in the iOS software underpinning its iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch products which allows for short messaging service (SMS) sender details to be spoofed.
The flaw, which stems from the handling of SMS text messages, allows a sender to manipulate the Reply-To header - making the message appear as though it has come from a different source. Currently being exploited by spammers to mask the origins of their adverts for PPI or personal injury claims, the flaw has more serious potential in allowing attackers to pretend to be a user's bank and request personal details.
According to the anonymous security researcher known as pod2g who discovered the flaw, the issue has existed since the very first version of iOS and continues to be a problem right into the latest beta release of the upcoming iOS 6.0 software update.
Apple, for its part, has admitted that there is an issue and that it is actively investigating the problem. "One of the limitations of SMS is that it allows messages to be sent with spoofed addresses to any phone," the company has explained in a statement to press, "so we urge customers to be extremely careful if they're directed to an unknown Web site or address over SMS.
"When using iMessage instead of SMS, addresses are verified which protects against these kinds of spoofing attacks", the company added in mitigation.
Despite claiming that it "takes security very seriously", Apple's claims that the problem affects "any phone" are somewhat disingenuous: many phones use the originating number header, which is both present and completely accurate in even spoofed messages, providing some protection against the attack. Apple's handsets, on the other hand, ignore this header in favour of the custom Reply-To header - resulting in a spoofing risk not present on rival devices.
Thus far, Apple has not indicated when - or if - it intends to patch the flaw.

Samsung outs new high-speed smartphone, tablet storage chips

Samsung has announced volume production of a new class of smartphone and tablet storage chip, promising a speed boost of up to four times compared to conventional products.
Dubbed eMMC Pro Class 1500 NAND, the new chips are capable of 1,500 input/output operations per second (IOPS) when writing data and 3,500 IOPS when reading data - around four times faster than existing eMMC memory. The additional speed is thanks to a combination of factors, including the use of a 20nm manufacturing processor and support for the JEDEC eMMC Specification 4.5.
This specification, which describes how memory and storage components should operate, includes both improvements in efficiency and reliability tweaks for ensuring data does not go missing in the event of a sudden loss of power.
With Samsung the first to support the eMMC 4.5 specification, it's likely that multiple manufacturers - and not just Samsung itself - will be looking to buy the parts, which are being produced in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities. As a result, we expect to see smartphones and tablets with the new components appearing over the coming months, and offering a significantly improved performance compared to existing products.
Samsung also claims that the reduction in size that comes with its use of a 20nm manufacturing process means that it will be possible for smartphone manufacturers to produce thinner and lighter models than ever before - although it has yet to confirm which smartphone makers are placing orders.

Nokia Lumia 920 hands-on: What the experts are saying

The Nokia Lumia 920 is officially the world's coolest and most innovative smartphone, running Windows Phone 8 and delivering a 4.5-inch display with Nokia PureMotion HD+ technology all in one amazing shell. You don't have to take our word for it, check out what the experts are saying with their Nokia Lumia 920 first impressions hands-on reviews.

The Nokia Lumia 920 is an amazing looking smartphone that packs in the latest tech, with tech-gadget site Gizmodo introducing it in similar fashion, 'The Lumia 920 is wonderful. It's smooth and fast and sleek and has a ton of future-is-here features.'

Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 smartphone with wireless charging, PureView and PureMotion

We like SlashGear's intro, as it nicely sums up how we feel about the Nokia Lumia 920, 'Nokia’s new flagship Lumia 920 is here, and for all the changes Windows Phone 8 brings it’s a familiar beast, instantly recognizable from the Lumias that went before it. As before, the polycarbonate casing sits neatly and comfortably in the hand, though it’s obviously – with a 4.5-inch display – a bigger phone than before; it also feels thicker, thanks to a bowed back panel. In a world that’s all about the details, the displeasing ridge around the display of the Lumia 900 has gone, with a smooth blend into the plastic body.'

Samsung Galaxy Note II review

Although it was long rumoured to be making an appearance at this year’s IFA, Samsung still managed to impress a room full of eager journalists with the Galaxy Note II last night. Its latest mobile/tablet hybrid is an evolution of the original note, which debuted at last year’s event.

The new model is slimmer and narrower, measuring just 9.4mm thick and weighing 180g, but with a larger 5.5in HD Super AMOLED display. Powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core processor and paired with 2GB of RAM, it’s one of the fastest Android devices around, and that’s not including the buttery smooth Jelly Bean operating system. It felt very quick during our brief hands-on time, even when loading multiple apps and using Samsung’s multi-tasking features.

Replicating the styling of the Galaxy S3, the Note II will be available in either white or titanium grey. No word on whether it will be receiving the same varied colour options as the S3 just yet, but both models certainly look stylish – even if it still dwarfs some hands. It felt comfortable in ours, helped by the slightly narrower dimensions, but it’s still a seriously big piece of kit. The AMOLED screen is simply gorgeous, with vibrant colours and impeccable viewing angles...

Backup capability will now be available to users signing in with a Microsoft account. When a Windows Phone 8 device is initially launched, users will be greeted with a splash screen encouraging them to use a Microsoft account. This is typically used to keep data in sync, but the screen on Windows Phone 8 hints that users will be able to keep "photos, contacts, music, documents and more" in sync with their PCs or Xbox consoles.

This information hasn't been confirmed, but seems Microsoft will allow Windows Phone 8 users to share data with an Xbox via SkyDrive, The Verge speculates. Apple has reportedly been negotiating with two mobile carriers in Korea to provide the iPhone 5 through their LTE networks, according to CNET. Officials from SK Telecom and KT allegedly revealed this information to the Korea Times.

"KT is in negotiation with Apple to persuade the latter to support KT's 1.8 gigahertz frequency in Korea for the upcoming iPhone," a senior KT executive said to Korea Times. A KT spokesperson declined to comment.

CNET has contacted Apple for more information on the matter and is waiting for a response. .bk_ggl div {height:92px!important; margin-bottom:20px!important;} Must ReadDemonoidDemonoid Return Could Be Halted By Anti-Piracy ActionWadjdaSaudi Arabia's First Female Moviemaker Debuts At Venice Film FestivalSponsorship Link

Both of these carriers are authorized Apple partners selling the iPhone in Korea, and these companies want Apple to utilize their LTE networks; however, supporting 4G LTE is more of a challenge than working with a 3G network since different LTE networks around the world use their own frequencies, as CNET acknowledges.

Follow us Twitter Follow Button">

In the United States, both Verizon and AT&T use 700MHz frequency, and AT&T also uses 2.1GHz. The Korean carriers SK and KT use different frequencies, which could push Apple to launch iPhone models with separate LTE modems to support varying frequencies. This is why the Korean variant of Apple's newest iPad doesn't come with LTE support.

But that doesn't mean LTE service isn't rapidly growing in Korea. At the end of July, the number of Korean LTE subscribers hit the 8.4 million mark and is expected to double that number by the end of 2012, The Korea Times reported. SK reached four million subscribers last month, only 44 days after it had achieved the three million milestone.

This could add pressure to Apple to produce iPhone 5 models that are compatible with LTE, leaving the Cupertino, Calif.-based company with the decision of whether or not it will be worth the cost and effort.

"If Apple's upcoming iPhone again fails to support LTE bandwidths, then this would be a very disappointing scenario as LTE is everywhere in Korea," an executive from SK Telecom told The Korea Times.

                                                  Preparing For The Masses

Apple clearly plans to gear up for mass production of its upcoming products, as its main supplier Foxconn Technology Group has invested up to $10 billion in labor in Indonesia. This would allow the Apple supplier to tap into one of the cheapest labor forces in Asia, as Reuters reported on Wednesday.

Foxconn has faced issues of labor unrest and rising wages in its main factories in China, and has attempted to diversify its production in different Asian markets.

"Foxconn already has factories in China and Brazil, and not yet one in Southeast Asia," Ali Soebroto Oentayo, chairman of Indonesia's electronics association, told Reuters. "I think Indonesia is a right decision from a market perspective."

The Taiwan-based company plans to begin building a plant in October in an industrial zone near Jakarta to assemble three million handsets a year, Reuters reported. Foxconn then plans to increase output later on, Indonesia's Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan said to the news wire service on Tuesday. The investment would be between $5 billion and $10 billion.

Foxconn sparked controversy in recent years for producing iPad and iPhones in factory conditions in China dubbed as sweatshops, resulting in worker deaths and suicides. Apple and Foxconn have since then pledged to improve working conditions for its 1.2 million employees in the country, and raise wages by 16 to 25 percent.

Apple is expected to unveil its next generation iPhone 5 alongside an iPad Mini on Sept. 12, with an alleged release date coming on Sept. 21. The company has yet to officially confirm this, but the rumor originated on Apple news blog iMore who cited "sources who have proven accurate in the past." On Tuesday, iMore also reported that Apple will start taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5 on the same day as the announcement.

                                                                Features And Rumors Round Up

The possibility of 4G LTE connectivity seems increasingly likely as CNET has reported, and on Tuesday an Apple patent delved into the mechanics of how Apple plans to create a thinner, sleeker "in cell" display. But what else may appear on the iPhone 5? Below is a list of alleged functions that are expected, although some are unconfirmed by Apple.

These indications come from discovered patents and words of Apple executives during conference calls and statements that have been reported on. But fans will have to wait until Apple finally decides to unveil its new iPhone to know which functions will make it to the final product. Read more about these features in detail here.
