Samsung outs new high-speed smartphone, tablet storage chips

Samsung has announced volume production of a new class of smartphone and tablet storage chip, promising a speed boost of up to four times compared to conventional products.
Dubbed eMMC Pro Class 1500 NAND, the new chips are capable of 1,500 input/output operations per second (IOPS) when writing data and 3,500 IOPS when reading data - around four times faster than existing eMMC memory. The additional speed is thanks to a combination of factors, including the use of a 20nm manufacturing processor and support for the JEDEC eMMC Specification 4.5.
This specification, which describes how memory and storage components should operate, includes both improvements in efficiency and reliability tweaks for ensuring data does not go missing in the event of a sudden loss of power.
With Samsung the first to support the eMMC 4.5 specification, it's likely that multiple manufacturers - and not just Samsung itself - will be looking to buy the parts, which are being produced in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities. As a result, we expect to see smartphones and tablets with the new components appearing over the coming months, and offering a significantly improved performance compared to existing products.
Samsung also claims that the reduction in size that comes with its use of a 20nm manufacturing process means that it will be possible for smartphone manufacturers to produce thinner and lighter models than ever before - although it has yet to confirm which smartphone makers are placing orders.
