MegaDroid project is a virtual town with 300,000 Android smartphones
What do you do with a town full of 300,000 Android smartphones? You run all sorts of tests, of course. But since not everyone would be willing to become a guinea-pig for a scientific experiment, researchers at the U.S. government’s Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California, are using an array of virtual smartphones through a datacenter with 500 cheap desktop computers.
This setup emulates a network of 300,000 Android smartphones, which includes exchange of SMS messages, wireless data, and an array of phone sensor and radio activity.
The main aim here is to study the interactions across different devices, which will eventually have a handful of practical applications. For instance, the team intends to use their findings to help developers that build social and location-based apps (such as Foursquare), those that build disaster-mitigation apps, and even developers planning to build mesh-type networks for emergency use.
Researcher are also looking into the possibility of Android smartphones running distributed applications over such a mesh network. This way, the phones need not rely on a central network, or even a WiFi network, in order to communicate with each other.
Apart from innovative ways for smartphones to communicate with each other, the research will also look into possible “attack vectors,” through which malicious hackers or malware can break into networks and Android smartphones. This is an important consideration today, given smartphone malware is on the rise today, especially within the Android ecosystem.
The researchers are planning to extend the experiment to other platforms such as Apple’s iOS, although Android is the ideal one at this point, given its more open nature.

Archos 101 XS Android tablet with Coverboard keyboard case
The Archos 101 XS is a 10.1-inch Android Ice Cream Sandwich tablet (with a Jelly Bean update due by November) that comes complete with a "Coverboard" magnetic keyboard. Made of a combination of fiber casing and steel, it's an attractive mix of chromes and white highlights, with the tablet measuring just 8mm thick (13mm when closed with the protective keyboard cover), and lighter than the new iPad at 600g.
Snapping together with strong magnets, the tablet and keyboard combine into a netbook format thanks to an adjustable kickstand that folds flush into the Coverboard when not in use. Though thin (and lacking the trackpad of the ASUS Transformer series), the keyboard has comfortable travel with its chiclet keys. There's no battery in the slimline keyboard (it's connected to the tablet via a proprietary USB connection, rather than a Bluetooth connection that would require power), but there is a microUSB port on the rear that allows it to act as a pass-through charging dock for the tablet.
You'll also find sockets for USB connections, mini HDMI and microSD dotted around the tablet's edge, though there's no 3G slot. With 16GB of onboard storage, that microSD card allows for up to 64GB of expansion (or 128GB theoretically, if that card SDXC card size ever went mainstream). All the usual sensors (G-Sensor, compass) and connectivity options (Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0) are onboard, as well as a 720p webcam.
With a snappy ARM Cortex A9 processor and 1GB of RAM, the 101 XS is responsive, even when under a heavy multitasking load and running intensive, 3D gaming apps. Even though the screen isn't full HD, it's perfectly capable of outputting 1080p video, stutter free over HDMI, with average usage squeezing 10 hours out of the battery according to the on-hand Archos representative at the launch event. Typing on the keyboard was as comfortable as any similarly sized tablet keyboard; despite the low profile, we could see a user getting plenty of real work done with the 101 XS.

Newest comScore Data: Android Still On Top; Samsung in 1st, LG in 2nd & Apple 3rd
The newest comScore data should have Google, Samsung and LG (?) fans happy. According to the latest marketing numbers from the company, Google's Android still leads in the following category: Top Smartphone Platforms 3; Month Avg. Ending Jul. 2012 vs. 3 Month Avg. Ending Apr. 2012; Total U.S. Smartphone Subscribers Ages 13+. Android took up 52.2% of the market, which was an increase of 1.4%. Apple's iOS came in second with 33.4%, which was an increase of 2%. These numbers came at the expense of RIM, Microsoft and Symbian. The most interesting thing about the study was the OEM numbers for the following category: Top Mobile OEMs 3; Month Avg. Ending Jul. 2012 vs. 3 Month Avg. Ending Apr. 2012; Total U.S. Mobile Subscribers (Smartphone & Non-Smartphone) Ages 13+. Samsung took first place (unsurprisingly) with 25.6%, which was a tiny decline of -0.3%. What was surprising is that LG is still in second place and Apple is still in third. LG held 18.4%, which was a decline of -0.8%, and Apple showed 16.3%, which was an increase of 1.9%. This dip was at the expense of Motorola which dropped -1.3% to an 11.2% marketshare.
Wow, even though they gained a few points, that's gotta sting for Apple to be second fiddle to LG. I wonder why they haven't sued them yet? For more info, hit the source link below.

Netflix Android App Update; 'WiFi only' Playback Feature to Help with Your Data Usage
Netflix has just added a new feature to their Android app with an update that could prove very useful. In fact, it's such a remarkably simple, yet useful feature that it makes you wonder why no one thought of it before. Their is now an optional setting that restricts video playback to WiFi networks. This will make it much easier to avoid any data overages with your carrier's data service. The default setting for this useful new feature is open to user discretion, so if you would like to take advantage of it, you will need to enable it.The best part of the feature is that you can still browse Netflix' library via your mobile connection, but your movie simply won't play without a WiFi connection. Neato! Of course, if you are with Sprint, or have one of T-Mobile's newest plans, then it really doesn't matter either way. For everyone else, we gotta give props to Netflix for helping us avoid overages.

Android 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich Now On 20.9% of Devices; Jelly Bean Up to 1.2% Already
The new OS data for Android has been released by the Android Developers, and things are starting to change a bit quicker now. The adoption rate of Android 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich was a bit slow since it was released, but over the past couple of months things have been accelerating. While Gingerbread still covers a vast majority of Android smartphones (with 57.5%), Android 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich is now on 20.9%. This is an increase of almost 6% in just a month for ICS and a decrease of about 3% for Gingerbread. Jelly Bean saw a small jump as well this month. It went from just .8% when it debuted, to 1.2% this month. It will be interesting to see how much quicker Jelly Bean gets adopted than ICS, since they are so similar.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Release Date For Samsung Galaxy S3 May Come This Fall, Other Devices Still In Testing Phase [VIDEO, FEATURES]
Google's newly announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system may be making its way to two of the most popular Samsung devices this fall, lining up with Apple's iOS 6 release date.

The Samsung Galaxy S3, which is the company's flagship smartphone of the year, and its Galaxy Note gadget may be getting the upgrade as soon as this autumn, Sam Mobile reports. The news comes from an insider source that has been correct about the Ice Cream Sandwich updates for Galaxy mobile phones and tablets, the website says.
Test firmwares for the Galaxy S3 have passed testing successfully, and the company is now working on a public version of the first Jelly Bean update for this device. The release date for Android 4.1 is waiting for Google's approval to officially roll out, according to Sam Mobile. The situation is the same for the Galaxy Note, and although testing has been successful there is "still no official word" from Samsung. .bk_ggl div {height:92px!important; margin-bottom:20px!important;} Must ReadDemonoid Return Could Be Halted By Anti-Piracy Action

As for the Galaxy S3's predecessor, the report indicates that the Galaxy S2 is still in the testing phase for the Jelly Bean update. However, the source has said that although no time frame has been specified, the Galaxy S2 will definitely receive the Android 4.1 software since it is still a popular device in the mobile market. If the Jelly Bean rollout for this device somehow falls through, users will receive some type of "value pack," but no details have been mentioned on what this offer will entail.
"If Samsung decides at the last moment not to update the Galaxy S II, all Galaxy S II owners will get a value pack update," the Samsung-themed website wrote. "But so far there is no reason not to update the Galaxy S II to Android 4.1."
Follow usSamsung will be unveiling its Galaxy Note 2 "phablet" device on August 29 at a Samsung Unpacked event, similar to the way the Galaxy S3 was revealed. The source that spoke to Sam Mobile said that it is unclear if this device will get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box or if it will come equipped with Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0.
This isn't the first time rumors have sparked about the Galaxy S2 and S3 phones getting the Jelly Bean update. At the end of July, Sam Mobile also reported that these smartphones were in the testing phases for the update, and speculated that the recently announced operating system would roll out in August or September. Previous rumors have also indicated that the Galaxy S2 would not get the Jelly Bean software, but Samsung has said nothing to confirm this statement. A report from early July, just days after Jelly Bean was announced, said that hardware limitations would prevent the S2 from supporting Android 4.1, but cited no sources to back up this claim.
Google unveiled its new "buttery smooth" Jelly Bean operating system at its I/E developer's conference at the end of June, and has since rolled it out to its line of Nexus 7 tablets, the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Nexus S and Motorola Xoom. It is expected to launch on other high-end devices in the coming months, but no announcements have been made.
The Jelly Bean software boasts a host of features that were not available on the previous Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, including the following:
Google Now: This is Google's iteration of a digital personal assistant. Google Now draws data about its users, and provides search results before a search is even performed based on previous entries. It will also create cards for users based on weather, traffic, places and more.
Project Butter: The Android 4.1 software is said to offer the smoothest interface of any Android operating system yet, an incentive known as "Project Butter." Scrolling and responsiveness are reportedly faster than in previous treat-themed updates.
Notifications and Widgets: Users can expand notifications and perform social functions such as replying to a tweet or sharing a photo through this drop down menu. Widgets are easier to place on the home screen, as items automatically move to create a space for a new icon. Launching and exiting apps are also quicker due to the smoother performance of the overall operating system.
Camera and Gallery: A slight upgrade allows Jelly Bean users to swipe between the camera and gallery app seamlessly.
Keyboard and Voice Input: The keyboard for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is more responsive, and users can add shortcuts to their dictionary to create their own shorthand terms. Voice input can be used to dictate notes and messages, and the feature can now be used offline as well.
A recent report has said that with its debut Jelly Bean is present on 0.8 percent of Android devices. This is a decent margin considering it has yet to be rolled out to the flagship Android smartphone on the market. Check out the video below to get a better grasp of what Jelly Bean is like on the Nexus 7 tablet.

New Getac Z710 Android Tablet Can Take a Thrashing and Dishes One Out to Your Wallet
There is a new touch-spec Android tablet coming to the market soon. It's called the Getac Z710, and the company claims it is the "world's most compact and robust Android tablet". While that lofty claim may or may not be true, one thing is for sure... this tablet will give your wallet a pounding that will make it beg for a hospital. The non-3G version of the tablet will sell for $1499.99, and the 3G version goes for $1799.99. Ouch! Here's a quote with a description of the tablet to give you an idea of its capabilities, Equipped with a Gorilla Glass display and a rubberized shell casing that encompasses the entirety of the tablet, the Z710 is engineered to take some serious abuse. Although we probably wouldn't suggest using it as target practice, the Getac Z710 is a suitable tablet for harsh work environments.Measuring in at 8.5 x 5.6-inches with slightly more than one-inch in thickness, the 2-pound tablet isn't the most portable of tablets. But its ability to survive drops of up to six feet, its certified protection against dust and liquids as well as its ability to operate in extreme temperatures as low as -4?F and high as 122?F makes it one tough cookie.
Another appealing aspect of the tablet for work environments is the company's LumiBond technology, allowing users wearing gloves to easily interact with the capacitive touch display. The Android 2.3 tablet is equipped with most standard tablet features including a front camera, a 5MP rear camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, barcode/RFID reader, Bluetooth and 3G availability.
I don't know about you guys, but this seems severely over-priced, even for a tough-spec device. Not long ago, we shared that Fujitsu will soon be offering a tough-spec device for just $549.99, and the well-known and well-respected Panasonic Toughpad goes for $1299.99. It will be interesting to see if this Getac really is that much tougher than those other offerings. If anyone in the forums has familiarity with previous Getac products, please let us know what is so special about them.Source: TomsHardware
Yup, they've priced themselves out of business. What a joke.

[Rumor] HTC May Jump Back into Android Tablet Game with 7 and 10-inch on Sept. 19th
If the leaked info and pic are accurate, then HTC may be poised to jump back into the Android tablet market. In fact, the intel indicates that this will be a big part of HTC's September 19th press event. Their HTC Flyer was pretty much a flop, primarily because it was over-priced for the specs compared to the competition. Perhaps HTC has learned their lesson from that experience. Regardless, here are the details that the "rumint" has revealed on the 7-inch tablet. There isn't much more than speculation and the picture above for the 10-inch tablet.7-Inch Tablet:
Android 4.1 Jelly BeanProbably will include support for the Scribe digital pen7-inch 1,280?768-pixel displayQualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor3-megapixel camera on the rear1-megapixel front-facing camera.Superslim 7.1mm thin anodized aluminum body
As you can see from the picture, the 10-inch tablet looks very HTC One-like. It's nice to see that HTC is sticking to a particular design aesthetic. We should know something for sure in a couple of weeks, and will keep you guys informed. If they can price it competitively, it could be worth checking out. What do you guys think?Source: HTConeForum via CNET
Really depends on the price, but I like the inclusion of the digital pen. I'm not even worried about the cheaper camera's either because personally I hate taking pics with my tab. I'd rather have a higher quality one on my phone.
Hopefully they will use a better digitizer layer this time around, HTC, and I think Lenova cut corners and ended up with a somewhat disappointing user experience.Sent from my Gibson using Tapatalk for Heavy Metal

Wikipad Gaming Android Tablet Shows Up at Gamestop with Specs, Pricing & More
We have surprising new info regarding the new gaming-focused Android tablet called the WikiPad. Just in case you missed it previously, the concept for this device has been floating around the web since at least January of this year. It had mostly faded into obscurity, with the occasional tidbit or rumor leaking out. Low and behold, the actual device has shown up with press pics, specs, pricing and a timeframe of availability at Gamestop! Here's a breakdown of what we have learned:Specs for the WikiPad Gaming Android tablet:
1.4 GHz quad-core Tegra 3 CPU10.1-inch 1280 x 800 IPS LCD1 GB of RAM16 and 32 GB of internal storage optionsAndroid 4.1 Jelly BeanWi-Fi 802.11 b/g/nDual 8 MP/2 MP cameras23.46 Wh batteryBuilt-in stereo speakersBuil-in GamepadA microSD slotSoftware Bonuses: Full access to Google Play and Tegra 3-optimized games, as well as ?exclusive full-length game titles? from GameStop and will be PlayStation Certified and optimized for the Gaikai platform.
The tablet is already up for pre-order on their website. It will retail at brick and mortar Gamestop stores for $499.99, and launch in October. That's a bit of a steep price if you just factor in the internal hardware, but taken as a whole, is decent enough to grab some sales for folks who want to do some hard-core gaming on their tablet. The competition is going to get tougher over the next few months (and more) in tablets though, so it remains to be seen if this impressive gimmick will be successful. Chime in your perspective. There are a few more pics at the source link below.Source: TheVerge and WikiPad

The price is a little steep, but not above and beyond what I would have expected. It would be a nice tab and the addition of the Gamepad is a really nice feature. However, given the number of tabs with similar specs coming out along with those company's developing Android Tablet based bluetooth gamepads, there's soon to be cheaper alternatives. I really like it though!

Android OS overtakes Apple; smart phone sales explode
Just in case the ubiquitous iPhone was getting on your last nerve, Google’s Android-based handsets have arrived to knock Apple off its pedestal and make the world safe for other smart phones. According to a report by market analysts Gartner Inc., Android exploded in the second fiscal quarter, leapfrogging right over the iPhone to become the No. 1 seller in America and No. 3 in the world. Nokia and BlackBerry have the largest market shares planetwide.
Sales of smart phones in general rose 50 percent in Q2, and Fortune predicts phones will outsell PCs in short order. CNET details the rise in HTC device sales, and Fast Company takes a look at Motorola’s weak results, despite its Droid phones.
In other smart phone news, India has reached the end of its rope with BlackBerry over monitoring within its borders, PC World is talking about the development of a phone for gamers, and ZDNet is covering the Samsung Epic 4G pre-orders that begin tomorrow.
