Techno sages said in a soothsaying manner that on 2016, smart phones would just be as common as an underwear. Not just those geek enthusiasts but also huge companies in the mobile industry which supports this statement, for obvious reasons. In order to manifest this into reality, several surveys were conducted by various mobile companies whose results yield its inclination in favor of the statement. But as 2012 entered, smart phones were seen and treated as a basic commodity. Big companies tried to infiltrate big countries, and fortunately luck is on their side. Now, the civilization of this technology is trying to plant its roots on those “Third World Countries”, and Philippines is no exemption.

The release date for Apple's iOS 6 is less than a month away, with the upcoming iPhone 5 expected to launch around the same time. Users may be excited about features such as the new map app from Apple, but there is one app that fans will be missing for certain: YouTube.

A new survey conducted by CouponCodes4U, a leading coupon code website in the United States, says that iPhone users are disappointed about the omission of the YouTube app on iOS 6. The company surveyed 2,135 Americans between the ages of 18-30, and respondents were initially asked whether or not they owned an iPhone.
Of those polled, 67 percent answered yes. Those in that percentage were then asked to specify which model of the iPhone they owned, with 51 percent answering with the iPhone 4S, 39 percent saying they had the iPhone 4 and 8 percent  voting that they owned the iPhone 3GS. .bk_ggl div {height:92px!important; margin-bottom:20px!important;}

More than half of these iPhone users, 63 percent, also said that they use the pre-installed YouTube app when asked. Of that 63 percent, 41 percent said that they use the YouTube app more than four times a week.
All of the respondents were asked how they felt about Apple's plans to drop YouTube from iOS 6. At 55 percent, more than half said that the decision was "disappointing."

But the elimination of the YouTube app with iOS 6 isn't the only issue Apple fans were polled about. The coupon company also delved into the increasing competition between Google and Apple, and how their rivalry is affecting the development of new apps.
When asked, 41 percent of the respondents said they felt that the ongoing battle between Apple and Google was having a "negative" impact on customers and developers. Additionally, 39 percent voted that Apple was "overstepping" the mark by refusing to incorporate the YouTube app and Google Maps, if it was because it was a Google product.
Mark Pearson, Chairman of CouponCodes4u.com, said that he was surprised by Apple's decision to exclude YouTube from iOS 6.
"As one of the most used websites at this moment, it comes as a bit of a surprise that Apple will no longer include the YouTube app on their iOS 6 interface," Pearson said. "As the competition between Apple and Google heats up, consumers are more likely to see more and more apps fall by the wayside as these two tech companies try to out-do each other."
Google has recently been fine-tuning and sprucing up its own Google Map service. The app will be getting an upgrade which will center on listings for public transportation options in nearly 500 cities worldwide, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday.
New technology that will be incorporated into Google Maps will allow users to hone in on directions for specific public transportation options, such as subways. Users can exclude other modes of transportation if they wish.
"I am very confident these are the best transit maps available," Brian McClendon, vice president of engineering for Google Maps, said to the Associated Press.
These improvements are only available to devices running on Android, an attempt to thwart impending threats from Apple as the company gears up to release its iPhone 5 and rumored iPad Mini.
The relationship between Google and Apple has been damaged ever since Google began promoting its Android mobile software in 2008, posing a challenge to the iPhone.

The iPad Mini is expected for an October release date, and yet another bit of evidence that it may launch soon has surfaced on the web. New iPad device codes have appeared on Instapaper developer's Marco Arment's logs, according to Mac Rumors.

Arment believes that these codes are in reference to Apple's alleged iPad Mini, which is predicted to be unveiled alongside the long-awaited iPhone 5 on Sept. 12. The allegedly leaked codes which appeared in the logs include "iPad2,5" and "iPad2,6."

With previous iPad releases, the code name "iPad2,1" through "iPad2,3" have represented variations of the iPad 2, such as the WiFi model and the GSM and CDMA models. The code "iPad2,4" represented a cheaper version of the iPad 2 that was launched alongside the "new iPad" that debuted in March.

The names "iPad2,5" and "iPad2,6" have not appeared before in any logs, indicating that this may signify that a new iPad is coming soon. Arment said that this is likely to be the iPad Mini, which will reportedly feature a 7-inch screen and hardware based on that of the iPad 2.

"The much more likely explanation is that iPad2,5 and iPad2,6 are the new 'iPad Mini' in Wi-Fi and GSM, and I haven't recorded the likely iPad2,7 CDMA version yet," Arment said, according to Mac Rumors.

He went on to say that the iPad Mini will bear striking similarities to Apple's iPad 2.

"If so, this suggests that the iPad Mini is, effectively, an iPad 2: an A5 with 512 MB of RAM and enough GPU power to drive the Gruber Display, but not a Retina Display," Arment said. "It's a textbook Tim Cook supply chain move: selling the last generation's hardware at a lower price point to expand marketshare."

This Gruber display mentioned above refers to speculations made by John Gruber that the iPad Mini makes sense with a 7.85-inch display. This shares the same resolution as the original iPad at 1024 x 760.

Arment goes into further detail about the possible features and specs that will appear with the iPad Mini in his blog post, "Predicting the 'iPad Mini' internals."

"This is all speculation, of course, but I'm convinced: like the leaked Dock connector, this move is so ingenious that it's most likely to be what Apple has really done," he writes.

Apple's rumored iPad Mini release is said to combat competitors in the smaller tablet market, such as Google's Nexus 7. A key factor in determining the success of the iPad Mini is the device's price, and how it compares to its rivaling gadgets.

The true answer as to whether or not Apple will lowball the price of its iPad Mini is whether or not it wants to crush the competition or main tan dominance, as CNET reports.

An iPad Mini price of $299 "would sit in a more comfortable place as far as profit," analyst Rhoda Alexander of HIS iSuppli said to CNET. However, Alexander believes that Apple could go as low as $249 when introducing its smaller tablet to the market.

For a higher end model with 4G LTE, the analyst said that $349 is a price often referred to as an entry point. And Google seems to be anticipating this potential release, as the search engine giant slipped its recently introduced Nexus 7 tablet into its home page.

Apple IPhone 5 Rumors: Accessory Allegedly Leaks In Video; Will The Release Date Be Delayed Due To Screen Production Problems?

The release date for Apple's iPhone 5 is expected to be announced in less than two weeks, and it's clear anticipation is at an all-time high. This summer has produced an unprecedented number of alleged leaks and rumors, and now images of what is believed to be a new set of earphones for the iPhone 5 have surfaced on the Web.

A Vietnamese website known as Tinhte.vn originally published the purportedly leaked photos, giving Apple fans sneak peeks at the new set of earbuds that may accompany the iPhone 5. It appears the headphones expected to come packaged with the next-generation iPhone have undergone a significant redesign.

The iPhone 5 accessory appeared in a video posted on the website, but a new version without the audio has replaced the original version. Mac Rumors was able to translate the audio track before it disappeared.

"In my hands are the new earphones for the iPhone 5 that is about to come out -- Apple's next generation iPod," the narrator said in the video, which also compares the earbuds to those of the iPhone 4S. "These will replace the current earphones that are on the market."

According to the video, the headphones were manufactured in the Phax Co. factory in Vietnam, and the new offering will feature an entirely different form factor than its predecessor.

"They have the appearance of a horse's head, not like earbuds," the narrator said. "When they are worn, they have a much smaller profile. They have the appearance of a fully integrated, single unit -- there's no part that looks like it will come apart -- not like earbuds; the integrated design is characteristic of Apple products."

These new earphones to be released with the iPhone 5 are also said to be designed so they do not hurt when placed in a user's ears, resulting in a more comfortable experience.

This revamp would make sense, as previous rumors have indicated that Apple is planning to redesign the body of the iPhone 5 to make it longer and sleeker than that of the iPhone 4S.

Although the iPhone 5 has not been unveiled yet, new accessories and cases for the device have already been showcased. At IFA 2012, accessory maker Skech displayed a new case that was a bit taller, complete with an opening for the rumored dock connector.

"It's all a gamble," Skech's Yishay Hornik told the Associated Press, according to Fox News. However, he did not seem worried about getting the details and features wrong, even though they haven't been announced yet.

Other smartphone accessory makers seem to share this confidence.

"The leaks that are out there I think are spot-on," a representative of accessory company Zagg told the AP.

Zagg plans to be ready by the end of September, but it is waiting on devices that plug into the iPhone because it is unclear what the new rumored dock connector will look like.

Rumors predict that the release date for the iPhone 5 will come on Sept. 21, nine days after an event that will announce the device publicly. However, it is unknown whether this will hold up as true, especially as electronics manufacturer Sharp has reportedly fallen behind on its production schedule for the iPhone 5 display, according to Reuters.

File Integrity Monitoring and SIEM - Why Layered Security Is Essential to Combat the APT

Every time the headlines are full of the latest Cyber Crime or malware Scare story such as the Flame virus, the need to review the security standards employed by your organization takes on a new level of urgency.

The 2012 APT (Advanced Persistent Threat)

The Advanced Persistent threat differs from a regular hack or Trojan attack in that it is as the name suggests, advanced in technology and technique, and persistent, in that it is typically a sustained theft of data over many months.

So far the APT has largely been viewed as Government sponsored cyber-espionage in terms of the resources needed to orchestrate such an attack, such as the recent Flame malware which appears to have been a US or Israeli backed espionage initiative against Iran. However you always see the leading edge of technology become the norm a year later, so expect to see APT attacks reach the more mainstream, competitor-backed industrial espionage, and 'hacktivist' groups like Lulzsec and Anonymous adopting similar approaches.

The common vector for these attacks is a targeted spear phishing infiltration of the organization. Using Facebook, LinkedIn or other social media makes identification of targets much easier today, and also what kind of phishing 'bait' is going to be most effective in duping the target into providing the all-important welcoming click on the tasty links or downloads offered.

Phishing is already a well-established tool for Organized Crime gangs who will utilize these same profiled spear phishing techniques to steal data. As an interesting aside regarding organized crimes' usage of 'cybermuscle', it is reported that prices for botnets are plummeting at the moment due to oversupply of available robot networks. If you want to coerce an organization with a threat of disabling their web presence, arm yourself with a global botnet and point it at their site - DDOS attacks are easier than ever to orchestrate.

Something Must Be Done...

To be clear on what we are saying here, it isn't that AV or firewalls are no use, far from it. But the APT style of threat will evade both by design and this is the first fact to acknowledge - like the first step for a recovering alcoholic the first step is to admit you have a problem!

By definition, this kind of attack is the most dangerous because any attack that is smart enough to skip past standard defense measures is definitely going to be one that is backed by a serious intent to damage your organization (note: don't think that APT technology is therefore only an issue for blue chip organizations - that may have been the case but now that the concepts and architecture of the APT is in the mainstream, the wider hacker and hacktivist communities will already have engineered their own interpretations of the APT)

So the second fact to take on board is that there is an 'art' to delivering effective security and that requires a continuous effort to follow process and cross-check that security measures are working effectively.

The good news is that it is possible to automate the cross-checks and vigilance we have identified a need for, and in fact there are already two key technologies designed to detect abnormal occurrences within systems and to verify that security best practices are being operated.

FIM and SIEM - Security Measures Underwritten

File Integrity Monitoring or FIM serves to record any changes to the file system i.e. core operating system files or program components, and the systems' configuration settings i.e. user accounts, password policy, services, installed software, management and monitoring functions, registry keys and registry values, running processes and security policy settings for audit policy settings, user rights assignment and security options. FIM is designed to both verify that a device remains hardened and free of vulnerabilities at all time, and that the filesystem remains free of any malware.
Therefore even if some form of APT malware manages to infiltrate a critical server, well implemented FIM will detect file system changes before any rootkit protective measures that may be employed by the malware can kick in.

Likewise SIEM, or Security Information and Event Management, systems are designed to gather and analyze all system audit trails/event logs and correlate these with other security information to present a true picture of whether anything unusual and potentially security threatening is happening.

It is telling that widely adopted and practiced security standards such as the PCI DSS place these elements at their core as a means of maintaining system security and verifying that key processes like Change Management are being observed.

At the core of any comprehensive security standard is the concept of layered security - firewalling, IPS, AV, patching, hardening, DLP, tokenization, secure application development and data encryption, all governed by documented change control procedures and underpinned by audit trail analysis and file integrity monitoring. Even then with standards like the PCI DSS there is a mandated requirement for Pen Testing and Vulnerability Scanning as further checks and balances that security is being maintained.

Summary

In summary, your security policy should be built around the philosophy that technology helps secure your organizations' data, but that nothing can be taken for granted. Only by practicing continuous surveillance of system activity can you truly maintain data security, very much the essence of the Art of Layered Security.
