Mobile phones on dinner table 'ruin relationships'

London, Oct 6 (ANI): Mobile phones can damage personal relationships merely by their presence even when not in use, a new research has revealed.

Studies show that if a mobile is visible during a conversation, it causes people to feel less positive towards the person with whom they are chatting.

The findings suggest that fiddling with your mobile or simply leaving it in view during a romantic dinner or a meeting with a friend could be a serious social faux pas.

Psychologists who conducted the experiments at Essex University believe mobile phones automatically trigger thoughts about wider social networks, reducing the level of empathy and understanding in face-to-face conversations.

"In both studies we found evidence mobiles can have negative effects on closeness, connection, and conversation quality," the Daily Mail quoted lead researcher Andrew Przybylski as saying.

"The presence of a mobile phone may orient individuals to thinking of other people and events outside their immediate social context.

"In doing so, they divert attention away from a presently occurring interpersonal experience to focus on a multitude of other concerns and interests," he said.

In July Microsoft fans got a glimpse of backup options to come with Windows Phone 8 when the SDK leaked, but until now there was no indication of how they would work.  But now, sources close to Microsoft have revealed more information about its plans for Windows Phone 8, reports The Verge.

Backup capability will now be available to users signing in with a Microsoft account. When a Windows Phone 8 device is initially launched, users will be greeted with a splash screen encouraging them to use a Microsoft account. This is typically used to keep data in sync, but the screen on Windows Phone 8 hints that users will be able to keep "photos, contacts, music, documents and more" in sync with their PCs or Xbox consoles.

This information hasn't been confirmed, but seems Microsoft will allow Windows Phone 8 users to share data with an Xbox via SkyDrive, The Verge speculates. These options were not offered with previous iterations of Microsoft's Windows Phone, and will be a handy feature in competing with the iCloud storage of iOS and Google's Android backup options.

Microsoft is expected to reveal more details at an event in New York City on Wednesday. Curious tech enthusiasts were able to get a sneak peek at what's in store for Windows Phone 8 at the IFA conference in Berlin, where Samsung showcased its ATIV S, a sleek and slim Windows Phone 8-enabled device.

"The beautiful, minimal and simple design, together with the premium, metallic hairline finish, make this device even more special," said a Samsung spokesperson last Wednesday. "Even with its slim profile and outstanding mobility, it's fully compatible with Microsoft Windows and users can enjoy various Windows-based content in an optimized environment."

The specs for Samsung's ATIV S Windows Phone 8 device are as follows, courtesy of Sci-Tech Today:

Android OS overtakes Apple; smart phone sales explode

Just in case the ubiquitous iPhone was getting on your last nerve, Google’s Android-based handsets have arrived to knock Apple off its pedestal and make the world safe for other smart phones. According to a report by market analysts Gartner Inc., Android exploded in the second fiscal quarter, leapfrogging right over the iPhone to become the No. 1 seller in America and No. 3 in the world. Nokia and BlackBerry have the largest market shares planetwide.

Sales of smart phones in general rose 50 percent in Q2, and Fortune predicts phones will outsell PCs in short order. CNET details the rise in HTC device sales, and Fast Company takes a look at Motorola’s weak results, despite its Droid phones.

In other smart phone news, India has reached the end of its rope with BlackBerry over monitoring within its borders, PC World is talking about the development of a phone for gamers, and ZDNet is covering the Samsung Epic 4G pre-orders that begin tomorrow.
